The Summer of Fun Things
I feel SO bad about neglecting this blog lately but my schedule has been chock full of stuff to do, both good and not-so-good. I’m trying to make an effort to write more often and my blog dashboard is littered with half-written posts that I plan on finishing this week so please be patient.
Now that Stink is 3 she wants to be outside almost all day and making new friends is at the top of her list of things to do. So I’ve been trying to make this the Summer of Fun Things, taking advantage of our memberships at the zoo, aquarium and children’s museum and purchasing season passes to a local amusement park, Lake Compounce. I also signed her up for swim lessons again, just for good measure.
Because we’re always running around somewhere our house looks like a war zone and we’re constantly short of clean beach towels and swimsuits. But everyone is happy and Connecticut summers don’t last long so for now we’ll deal with a messy house and daily loads of laundry. It’s a small sacrifice to make for a happy, exhausted Stink.
Unfortunately we’ve had to pause the Summer of Fun Things for the past few days because we’re dealing with a smashed toe. Stink’s iPad slid off the couch and landed directly on her big toe. It bruised up immediately and she refused to walk on it. The doctor said it’s not broken but she’ll lose the nail, probably this week. Ironically it’s the same nail that I lost from climbing Mount Kilimanjaro (though mine took a month to come off!). Her toe has bled a couple times but now she can walk on it just fine and doesn’t seem to notice her injury unless we’re trying to change the band-aid or (gasp!) TOUCH IT. Then of course it’s the most painful thing EVER. I’m worried about infection so we’re trying to keep it super clean but it’s hard with a kid who still wants to go outside every day and play in dirt. It’s hard work making sure your child doesn’t lose any appendages.
If you recall last August Oso was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. We were afraid he wouldn’t last the rest of the year but he’s still chugging along. We’ve had to add Prednisone to keep his seizures at bay but he’s doing rather well with just his medications and prescription diet. He still has seizures from time to time, especially when he gets excited or tired from exercise, but they’re not often and we can usually stop them by spreading a little corn syrup on his gums. If that doesn’t work then he get a syringe of Valium in the butt that turns him into a floppy ball of fur for the rest of the day. We’ve stopped taking him on outings for the summer in order to prevent further seizures (and Valium shots).
July is going to be a quiet month for us, just exploring all that Connecticut has to offer, but we’ve got plans at the end of the summer to visit family in Pennsylvania. I’m trying to make this an annual vacation for us. I remember having one annual summer vacation a year, spending 2 weeks in Georgia with my grandparents, and it was something I always looked forward to. I’d love for Stink to have those same happy memories of visiting her great grandmother and cousins and spending the day at Idlewild Park like I did as a child. This will be the fourth year in a row that we’ve gone to Pennsylvania for the summer and I’m REALLY looking forward to it.
As far as future vacations go, that’s a little up in the air. We had plans to go to Cancun next June but that hit the chopping block and other plans are in the works. Possibly a summer vacation in Maine with extended family, definitely a vacation in January whose destination we can’t agree on. Costa Rica? Cancun? Orlando…again? Brandon thinks Stink would enjoy Orlando more (of course she would) but I would prefer a relaxing all-inclusive vacation that doesn’t include a schedule of some sort. I’m leaning heavily towards Cancun. I plan to use airline miles for free flights and possibly hotel rewards for some free nights so it won’t be an expensive trip for us. Feel free to give suggestions and advice to help us choose a destination and stay tuned for an update on where we’ll be heading next!
